Dyslexia Assessments

Assessments for adults and children

At Hands on Dyslexia, we tutor and assess children from the age of seven, up to and including adults.

Our assessors are ‘Specialist Assessors’ who have qualifications at Masters level which enables them to hold an Assessment Practising Certificate (or APC for short).

To maintain an APC, it is a requirement that we conduct extensive continuous professional development. This professional development ensures that we are aware of cutting edge research both in assessing and tutoring.  We assess for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) such as Dyslexia and our area of expertise is in literacy based difficulties.

If you require an assessment for Autism,  ADHD, Dyspraxia or Dyscalculia then it may be better to contact either your GP, Educational Psychologist or Occupational Therapist.

Assessments can take place either face to face or online.

Our assessments take approximately three hours over the course of either one or more sessions. They are conducted in a relaxed and friendly manner where the tests are presented as games and quizzes. Quite surprisingly many children and adults enjoy the process!

The detailed and thorough reports take three to four weeks to produce and are some 30 pages in length.

We like to spend an hour with parents or, if over 16, the students themselves, explaining our findings. This time spent reviewing the report is invaluable as we can  explain our recommendations and help to formulate a path forward. This hour is included in the price.

Frequently asked questions

  • The assessment takes approximately three hours to complete but this does vary according to the individual. However, this includes lots of little breaks and rests.

  • You should bring snacks, drinks, glasses (if you normally wear them for reading/writing) and any relevant medication (such as inhalers if you require them).

  • The assessments take place either at the centre (near Princes Risborough), in Haddenham (depending on which assessor you have), in some local schools or online if you choose this option.

  • The assessments are carefully designed to ensure that they are not too easy or tricky for you. If the examiner finds that they are too difficult you will be asked easier questions and most of the tests stop before they become impossible for you to complete.

  • The reports take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete.

  • In total the reports are about 30 pages but some of this is information describing the tests and the scoring systems

  • The assessors will discuss the findings with you and help you work out a future plan. The assessments contain a recommendation section for home, school/college (if appropriate) and in the office (if appropriate).
